Classroom Information letter

Welcome to Mrs. Walston’s 2nd Grade Nest!

I am excited to fly beside you and your child for the 2016-2017 school year! I hope that our classroom theme will make this year a “tweet” one for your child.  I strongly believe in the home/school partnership so please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime via email swalston@msad49.org  or call 453-4240.

BEHAVIOR PLAN & RULES ARE ATTACHED. ** PLEASE review both with your child.

NEWSLETTERS: I will send home a weekly newsletter every Monday throughout the year to keep your informed!

HOMEWORK: Our  homework will begin in early October  and will consist of reading, weekly word lists, as well as a reviewing your child’s daily math lesson with them.  Yearlong practice of addition and subtraction facts and grade level high frequency words practice is encouraged too. More details to follow...

BOOK ORDERS: I will send home order forms and provide you with the online ordering information on a monthly basis. This is OPTIONAL.

ELECTRONICS: Due to the risk of loss and getting broken, I highly recommend that Game Boys, I pods, I pads, Kindles, and other technology be left at home.  Thank you for your understanding.

SHARE SCHEDULE: Your child will be signing up for a day that  he/she can bring in ONE item to show and tell the flock about. We will start this NEXT WEEK. Sharing will take place during our lunchtime daily. Your child will be allowed to share only on their day so toys and such are only allowed on their “share day” to avoid distractions and prevent loss of precious items. Thank you for your help in monitoring this.

ARRIVAL  & DISMISSAL:  Per the office: Students should not be dropped off before 8:15. Please report directly to the office with your child anytime that your child is tardy. Due to safety being a top priority, parents are not allowed in the pod area without a pass from the office.

**If your child attends Benton’s Afterschool Program or is picked up regularly, PLEASE send in a note stating the days that this occurs and include that it is for the whole school year. This way we will have a record of this with your signature.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: This year all K-8 classrooms will continue to use the  WRITING program by Lucy Calkins. The program allows for focus on your child’s individual writing development and we’ll learn about narrative, opinion, and informational writing through daily lessons and practice. We will use the same EnVisions’ math program that your child had in K and 1st grade. I also follow the Reading Workshop framework which includes Shared reading, Guided Reading, Read Alouds, Independent reading, Literacy skill centers, etc. For Word Study (aka spelling) I use an Individualized approach which involves your child learning a weekly word rule/spelling pattern and choosing ten grade level words not yet mastered for a Friday “buddy test” with various types of practice activities throughout the week. We will have Science and Social Studies Units throughout the year embedded in our Literacy block. Our district has adopted the NEXT GEN science standards which will begin this school year.

If you have any specific questions or concerns about my classroom, don’t  hesitate to contact me! I look forward to a POSITIVE and EXCITING year with your child!
