Each Reader’s Workshop will begin with a Shared Read (a book, short story, or article I will read to them) and students will also read books independently, in small groups, and with partners. All aspects of reading including reading strategies, vocabulary, and comprehension will be worked on during this time.
We will use The Units of Study writing program that incorporates the Common Core writing standards. This program will focus on personal narrative writing, informational writing, opinion writing, and fairy tale writing. The learning that takes place will be celebrated at the end of each unit.
In third grade, we will work on numeration, number sense with addition and subtraction, place value, multiplication, division, fractions, 2-D shapes, time, perimeter, area, liquid volume and mass, and data by using the program Envisions Math. Three to four times a week students will have a short homework assignment that reinforces their learning.
Word Study (Spelling)
Each week, students will focus on a specific spelling principle and learn words that are appropriate for their spelling level. Throughout the year, students will also work on learning how to read and spell high frequency words from the third grade word list.
Students will study the government, geography, and history of the state of Maine. Hands on experiences include field trips to the Margaret Chase Smith House and Museum, the Maine State House and Museum, and to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park. We will also study economics and Milton Hershey’s role as an entrepreneur.
Our district has adopted the NextGen standards and so, third graders will work on concepts such as force and motion, life cycles, habitats, and weather. Our field trip to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park gives students the opportunity to experience some of the habitats we will study.
