Our district uses The Lucy Calkin’s Writing Program. The fourth-grade units that we cover are as follows:
Unit 1: The Arc of Story: Writing Realistic Fiction
Within this unit the goal is for the children to learn that the lenses they use for reading fiction can also be use to write fiction. In doing so they use rich details to develop believable characters who encounter struggles and motivations.
Unit 2: Information: Animal Essay
The goal of this unit is to compose a scientific research essay by which they collect evidence and use details to vividly describe an animal.
Unit 3: Boxes and Bullets: Personal and Persuasive Essays
The goal of this unit is that the children will learn the value of organization and form as they gathered evidence to support and express their opinion on a topic.
Unit 4: Information: Bringing History to Life
The goal of this unit is to compose a historical research essay by which they collected evidence and use details to vividly describe people and events of long ago and far away.
Unit 4, The Literary Essay: Writing About Fiction
The goal of this unit is to bring all of the writing experiences full circle. The children will build upon their learning of essay writing while applying it with increasing sophistication to a unit on literary essays—that is, writing about fiction.
