Classroom Information

I am so excited to have you or your child this year! We are going to explore many fascinating subjects and learn so many amazing things. We will be engaging in thought-provoking discussions on a range of subjects or applying our knowledge to solve problems (both on and off the page)! We will work as a whole group, but also in small groups, partners, or individually throughout the day. Most of all, we will be actively growing our minds and focusing on how to be successful both inside and outside of school.

Some of the topics we will be learning in math include multi-digit multiplication, long division, place value, adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, geometric figures, lines, and angles. As students finish their assignments, they have the opportunity to extend their learning with programs such as IXL, FASTT Math, and Pearson. All students are encouraged to learn their multiplication facts. All of these programs can be accessed at home through their clever accountStudents may also extend their learning at home with online math games or practice that can be found on websites such as Xtra Math, Cool Math Games, or ABCYa.

Reader's Workshop
Reader's workshop is one of my favorite times of the day, and the students tend to enjoy it as well! Together, we will dive into the world of Phantom of the OperaLost On a Mountain in MaineWinnie-The-PooSarah Plain and TallVivaldi,  and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. We will take part in discussions inspired by these stories as well as articles from Time for Kids and National Geographic. We will also explore many important topics through our morning read aloud, such as having a growth mindset, showing respect, being kind, and empathy.

Writer's Workshop
During our writer's workshop, we will learn and practice the art of writing narrative stories, informational texts, and personal persuasive essays. We will also experience the power of poetry throughout the year. Students are encouraged to free write at home or keep a journal. We talk about how writing is an expression of your heart and mind, and there are many benefits of writing daily! Content Workshop
Content workshop is all about science and social studies! In Science we will learn about different plants and animals, energy and motion, natural disasters, and even about engineering!  In Social Studies, we are going to learn about "The Bill of Rights", review the continents and oceans, study the regions and land forms of the US, and we will focus tourism and economy in the different regions of Maine.  Some of this information will take place during content workshop, but others will be stretched into Writer's Workshop. There are many great resources to help at home with extending the learning in school as well!
