I am so glad that you have landed in this class that we will share!  I am a huge believer in the Responsive Classroom approach to learning, which means that we will spend time throughout this year defining our goals and then working hard to reach those goals with the help of others in our community of learners.  In addition to exploring new academic skills, we will also build social skills, such as respect for self, respect for others and personal responsibility.  These principles will guide us as we embark on our academic adventures throughout the school year.  Our goal is for every person in our community to feel safe, included and valued as learners and as individuals.  We will also work to integrate opportunities to better ourselves and our community into our work with the curriculum. I can not wait to begin our adventures together!

Your 6th grade year is full of exciting ideas, opportunities to grow, chances to explore and ways to become a more informed and thoughtful person.  Throughout the year, we will be exploring various themes that will tie together our learning in literacy block with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math practices as well as our study of Government and History. Beginning on the first day of school, we will explore civics and citizenship.  Our goal will be to understand our role as individuals in our government and our various communities, and how to become active participants in each.  Next, we will explore ocean ecology and coastal life through our study of the novel, Young Man and the Sea, a trip to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and research into fishing and fisheries. In the course of the rest of the year, we will also explore westward expansion, college essay writing, The Great Fire of Chicago, biology and microscopes, the US Civil War and engineering.
