Hello my name is
I am Dennis Bubar. I am one of four Reading Recovery teachers here at Benton Elementary School. This is my 18th year teaching Reading Recovery. It is my 4th year teaching at Benton Elementary School.
Part of my day, I work doing Reading Recovery. In Reading Recovery I work one-on-one with a first grade student. Reading Recovery teachers work with the lowest first graders in reading. Our goal is to get them to the average of their class in reading, as quickly as possible.
The other part of my day is working with other first or second graders who need extra reading instruction. I might work with them one-on-one or in groups. Our goal is to get the lowest of the first and second graders up to the reading level they should be at the end of the year.
I received my B. A. degree in Education from the University of Maine in 1989. I worked as a Title 1 teacher teaching reading, language arts, and math. In 1994-1995 I was trained in Reading Recovery. I taught Reading Recovery for 3 years. I was then a second grade teacher for 2 years. I came here 15 years ago to teach Reading Recovery.
During the year I attend classes to help me continue to learn and improve my teaching in Reading Recovery. I am required to go to one conference each year so that I can hear and learn from educators from across the country and around the world.
I enjoy watching students learn and discover that they can now do something that was previously too difficult. You can see it in their eyes when they know they can read. They have the power that other people have and they desire.
As a Title 1 instructor I could move students along but couldn’t accelerate them to catch up with the other students in their classes. I knew there had to be a better way to teach students. I was trained in Reading Recovery and learned how to accelerate students so they can catch up and stay with their peers. Now I feel I can help students strive to their fullest potential.
